Doug Fredrikson’s connection to golf began in Atlanta, growing up immersed in the game alongside his father. As a youngster, he caddied for him, and while waiting for his father and enjoying a few drinks, Doug would explore the clubhouses around him. It was there he discovered a lasting appreciation for the history and heritage of both the clubs and the game.
He studied architecture at Georgia Tech where, by a stroke of fortune, Bobby Jones had once shared fraternity life. He continued with his Master’s in Solar Architecture at Arizona State University. The desert captivated him, and he made it home.
Fredrikson’s first clubhouse commission came from Troon Country Club in Scottsdale — and more than 40 years later, he’s still collaborating with them to reimagine and update it for modern members. “Success has always been a client who stays with you,” he often says. That lasting relationship has defined a career rooted in marrying his passions for golf and architecture.
His portfolio reads like a who’s who of club landmarks: Grayhawk, Whisper Rock, We-Ko-Pa, Papago, Arizona Biltmore, The Hills at Promontory, Seven Canyons, Southern Highlands, Indian Wells Golf Resort, Escena and The Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain. Several of these clubhouses have been named Golf Inc. Clubhouse of the Year — honors he holds in high regard.
