Completion of the final phase of renovation for the 27-hole Calawassie Island Club in South Carolina was marked earlier this month with a champagne toast, ribbon cutting and an Oktoberfest celebration.
The renovation of the three nine-hole links by the design firm of original designer Tom Fazio included rebuilding and regressing of all 27 greens, some re-routing to restore Fazio’s original design elements, and installation of a new state-of-the-art irrigation system. The renovation’s total cost was $4 million.
The 27 greens were rebuilt and grassed with Mini Verde ultradwarf hybrid Bermuda, in consultation with former Augusta National superintendent and golf course architect Billy Fuller.
The new irrigation system saved the club over 30 million gallons of water between May 2007 and May 2008, according to club officials.
