Cabot opens Old Petty Golf Course, details future expansion plans

Cabot has officially opened Old Petty, the second golf course at Cabot Highlands in Inverness, Scotland, while also looking ahead to its next phase of growth.

As the company celebrates the debut of the Tom Doak-designed course, CEO and co-founder Ben Cowan-Dewar said Cabot is preparing to launch new real estate offerings at Cabot Highlands and remains focused on expanding its portfolio with projects that fit the company’s vision.

“Opening Old Petty is a proud moment for everyone involved,” Cowan-Dewar said. “It builds on the legacy of Castle Stuart while creating something entirely new for golfers to experience here in the Highlands. This is a special piece of land, and Old Petty brings a fresh perspective that feels authentic and enduring.”

The Old Petty course features a walking-only links-inspired routing inspired by the way golf was played more than 200 years ago. The course follows a tidal estuary and features views of the coastline as well as a restored bothy (a basic, free-to-use shelter common to the Scottish Highlands) near the hole 5 green.

The course sits alongside Castle Stuart (the castle itself and the other course at Cabot Highlands) and is adjacent to the 1839 Old Petty church, from which it draws its name. It also overlooks the Moray Firth, the largest inlet of the North Sea in Scotland, on hole 14.

“It’s a privilege to work in Scotland and just to be back at the heart of it all,” Doak said. “For me and for Clyde, it was important to build something that would appeal to both overseas visitors and the locals — fitting in with the other courses in the area while having something special about it so that you wouldn’t want to miss it. Playing around the 400-year-old Castle Stuart is a pretty good start, and we used the castle as a visual anchor for the routing throughout.”

Cabot Highlands is located ten minutes from the city of Inverness, which is known as the capital of the Scottish Highlands and offers a mix of both culture and historical significance for visitors. Cowan-Dewar said that Cabot will also soon be launching new real estate offerings at Cabot Highlands to accompany the completion of the Old Petty Course.

“We are incredibly proud of the recent opening of Old Petty,” he said. “[It’s] a distinct golf experience that feels deeply connected to the history and landscape of Inverness. Our focus right now is on this exciting new chapter at Cabot Highlands.”

Cowan-Dewar also mentioned what’s next for Cabot elsewhere in the world.

“Cabot has an exciting year ahead, particularly in British Columbia,” he said. “This fall, we will begin limited preview play at Cabot Revelstoke, our new all-season mountain destination featuring an 18-hole golf course designed by Rod Whitman. Come early 2027, we will celebrate the opening of Cabot Revelstoke Mountain Lodge, a 155-room luxury hotel. We also look forward to debuting an exclusive collection of Alpine-inspired residences currently available for purchase.”

While Cabot specializes in creating bespoke golf experiences unique to the part of the world where they are located, the ethos is less about choosing a specific location ahead of time and more about finding destinations with natural beauty that can accommodate their vision.

“We continue to see compelling opportunities around the world and are excited about pursuing projects that feel authentic to the Cabot brand and uphold the standard we’ve established across our portfolio,” Cowan-Dewar said.
