Watermark adds 5th course in Grand Rapids

Watermark Properties, which owns four courses in Grand Rapids, Michigan, will add a fifth course in January with the acquisition of The Golf Club at Thornapple Pointe.

Thornapple Pointe opened in 1997 and has operated as a public course. Watermark’s other facilities — Sunnybrook Country Club, Watermark Country Club, StoneWater Country Club, and Thousand Oaks Country Club — are all private.

“The new purchase will not have an impact on Watermark Properties’ current private memberships or course options for members,” Watermark said in an announcement. “Thornapple Pointe will remain a public course and banquet facility under the new ownership, and will operate separately from Watermark’s private course model. “

Watermark acquired Sunnybrook Country Club, which was owned by its members at the time, in 2009 for $2.1 million. The Watermark business model called for the golf and swimming facilities to be member-only, but the club’s dining and catering activities to be open to the public.
