The Union League of Philadelphia has acquired a second golf course, The Sand Barrens Golf Club in Swainton, N.J., a 236-acre, 27-hole facility. The previously public facility will be renamed, Union League National Golf Club, and only open to Union League members.
In 2014, the Union League acquired the Torresdale Frankford Country Club, which is located in the Philadelphia suburbs. That facility was renamed and has added to the appeal of the private club, which started with its downtown Philadelphia location.
This latest acquisition is located at the Jersey shore, 71 miles from the main club building in Philadelphia. It is the club’s second facility at the Jersey shore. In 2014, it acquired a restaurant in Stone Harbor, which is ten miles from Swainton. That facility has been a popular hangout for members who own second homes in the area.
The Union League was founded in 1862 by men who supported the Union cause during the Civil War. The club has been growing at a fast pace, driven by state-of-the-art dining and aggressive programming.
