Sterling Golf Management takes over Rockland G.C.

Sterling Golf Management has taken over operation of the Rockland Golf Course in Rockland, Mass. Rockland Golf Course is owned by The Trust for Public Land, a national nonprofit conservation organization.

“As an organization with a mission to conserve land for people, we are thrilled that Sterling, with a reputation for bringing private course conditions to public golf courses, will continue to focus on junior golf and increasing the accessibility and love of the game,” said Chris LaPointe, Senior Project Manager with The Trust for Public Land.

In 2003, the 74-acre Rockland Golf Course was proposed to be closed and turned into a 175-unit housing development. The town of Rockland wanted to preserve the land as open space and worked with The Trust for Public Land toward that goal. In 2007, The Trust for Public Land acquired the course and has leased it out since then.

The Rockland course is one of the longest 18-hole par 3 layouts in the country. Its clubhouse, used for many local gatherings, has a full-service restaurant, pro shop and rooms which can be used for a variety of functions.

“Rockland offers a fun and challenging par 3 design,” said Kevin Osgood, president of Sterling Golf. “Its beautiful water features and wooded setting make it a welcoming course for both new and seasoned golfers.”

Sterling Golf was chosen from among several proposals submitted through a bid process. It was given a 10-year management contract.

Sterling Golf has been in operation for more than twenty years. It owns the Shattuck Golf Club in Jaffrey, N.H., and operates a number of public courses in the greater Boston area, including Newton Commonwealth Golf Course, Norwood Country Club, Chelmsford County Club, and it maintains the Fore Kicks Golf Club in Norfolk. It also recently took over management of Maynard Country Club in Maynard Mass., and renamed it Maynard Golf Course.
