The Golfsmith chain of retail outlets has purchased one of golf’s most venerable equipment brands, MacGregor Golf.
MacGregor now will become a house brand sold at Golfsmith outlets, joining other formerly independent retail names such as Lynx and Snake Eyes sold by the off-course retailer.
Albany, Ga.-based MacGregor Golf in recent years had been part of the business empire headed by golf star Greg Norman, but sales had languished in recent years. Norman himself recently announced that he would switch to playing TaylorMade clubs.
Golfsmith officials said the brand will be relaunched later this year, with the focus on game-improvement clubs and balls. The MacGregor name also will be used for accessories such as bags and gloves.
