Members of the Morpeth Golf Club in the United Kingdom purchased the club from the Castle Morpeth Council just hours before the council ceased to exist on March 31.
The transaction was a reversal of a national trend, where, like the U.S., a number of private clubs have recently been taken over by public entities or sold to developers.
Morpeth Golf Club, founded 103 years ago, was designed by Harry Vardon, the six-time Open Championship winner and namesake of the Vardon Trophy.
The purchase price for the club was not disclosed, but members reportedly secured approximately 25 percent of the price with personal loans.
