A citizens committee has presented an ambitious $146 million development plan to the Ogden, Utah, city council that calls for, among other things, construction of a 350-unit condominium and hotel complex ($119 million), a $1.4 million clubhouse and a substantial renovation of the city-owned Mount Ogden Golf Course.
The genesis of the Mount Ogden Golf Course Committee’s proposal was a request by Ogden Mayor Matthew Godfrey for suggestions that would increase play and revenues at the course, which operated at a $222,673 deficit last year. In addition to changes in course design and playability improvements, the committee recommended a new irrigation system and the new clubhouse.
The overarching goal of the proposal was to make Ogden a destination recreation resort for the area’s outdoor recreation enthusiasts and visitors. The report suggested that a major hotel operator such as Marriott could be contracted to develop and operate the resort hotel and condo facilities, which would be built in phases.
A majority of the land is city-owned property, with some owned by Weber State University. The committee recommended that the site of two Weber State buildings be converted to a double-deck driving range with heated stalls, since the buildings are scheduled to be moved anyway.
Plans also call for a driving range and practice facility that would make Mount Ogden Golf Course a suitable home for the Weber State golf team.
The plan is currently under consideration and will likely be augmented by additional studies before it comes to a final vote.
