Rick Phelps, ASGCA, formed Phelps Golf Design, LLC in 2006 when Dick Phelps decided to slow down his 40+-year career in golf course architecture. Phelps Golf Design LLC operated under the business name of Phelps-Atkinson Golf Course Design from 2007 to early 2021.
Rick now has over 30 years of full-time golf course design work experience. However, he has been working in some capacity in the business since the age of 10 (over 45 years ago)!
Rick has been an active member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects since 1999 and served as President of the organization in 2011-12.
The firm’s reputation is built around Client satisfaction and designing fun, exciting, cost effective and sustainable golf course projects of every type imaginable. With 16 new golf course design projects and well over 200 remodel projects to his credit, Rick brings a wide variety of design problem solving to every project, no matter the size or circumstance.
Five of the firm’s new projects were recognized in local and national media with various awards in the first year after opening, including three projects that made the Golf Digest “Best New” lists in their respective year of opening.
Rick has worked in many different climate zones throughout the United States, including both warm season and cool season turf areas. He has completed concept planning work in five international locations, to date, with none of those projects moving forward to construction.
