Troon acquires tennis management firm

Troon, one of the biggest brands in the golf industry, is adding a new sport to its expanding portfolio.

Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Troon has acquired Cliff Drysdale Management (CDM), the largest tennis management firm in the United States. The purchase price was not disclosed.

As part of the deal announced July 10, CDM will continue to operate under the Cliff Drysdale brand. President and CEO Don Henderson will continue in that role, The company’s namesake, tennis Hall of Famer Cliff Drysdale, also will maintain an interest in the business, remaining involved in long-term planning, promoting partnership relations and making event appearances.  

For Troon, the largest golf management company in the world with 280 courses in its portfolio, the acquisition is the latest in a series of deals that have expanded the company’s reach within the golf industry and in other fields.

The company purchased CaddieMaster in 2015 and Honours Golf in 2014. Through those entities and its Troon Privé and Troon International subsidiaries, it operates in 330 locations around the globe.

In addition to golf, Troon is involved managing in homeowner associations, private residence clubs and associated hospitality venues. Its food and beverage division manages more than 150 restaurants located at golf resorts, private clubs, daily fee golf courses and recreational facilities. 

Troon President Tim Schantz said the acquisition is a natural fit for Troon as it seeks to expand its golf and golf-related hospitality expertise.

“It will also provide new and exciting opportunities for Troon and CDM associates, members and guests, and will help to grow the ever-popular sport of tennis around the world,” he said.

CDM, headquartered in New Braunfels, Texas, specializes in tennis program development, daily tennis operations and tennis management for resorts, hotels, municipalities, private tennis clubs and communities. It also is involved in design and construction consultation for tennis facilities and in creating tennis educational programs, events and travel packages.

The company has 30 locations in nine states and two countries and employs more than 200 tennis and club management professionals and 40 directors and executive staff.
